Video of the detonation of the Tsar Bomba Hydrogen Bomb in 1961. The largest explosion ever created by mankind. The Russian physicists involved on the project warned that the sheer size and heat could potentially set fire to the atmosphere of Earth and destroy all life, the Soviets decided to continue anyway.

Some facts about the Tsar Bomba;

  • The bomb is estimated to of had a yield of 60 Mt, in contrast the second largest bomb was the American Hydrogen B41, which had a yield of 25Mt.
  • The shockwave resulting from the explosion traveled around the entire Earth 3 times.
  • The bomb had the power output of 1.4% of the Sun. Or every explosive used in WW1 and WW2 (including Hiroshima and Nagasaki) combined together, and multiplied by 10.
  • The mushroom cloud formed was 168 times higher than the Empire State Building, and as wide as the island of Manhattan.
  • The flash of light from the immediate explosion was visible from 622 miles away, followed 49 minutes later by the sound of the explosion.
