Honestly all of DCTV would be torn apart if nerds and bloggers couldn’t use them to bash the DC movies, the writing is seriously bad I don’t see how anyone could honestly think this was quality superhero storytelling
While there are lots of people who do genuinely enjoy the shows, a lot of people also use it as their spiteful measuring stick, because of their bogus agenda to either be part of the popular anti-dceu group think or because they think they know best what kind of stories these characters should tell. The DCEU started in 2013, the Flash series started in 2014, the rest are afterwards but the Flash was the first of the DCTV shows that was being used to bash the DCEU. The only one that came before them is Arrow, and we know how divided the opinion of Arrow is and how Arrow is actually never compared to the DCEU. When Supergirl premiered, people made fun of it for being a glorified SNL series but immediately also started using it to bash Man of Steel, even though the show takes a lot of creative inspiration from it. I’ve seen lots of half assed posts about how Supergirl in its first few episodes made the Super brand look hopeful than the DCEU, which is ignorant because Kara’s struggles are not so much that of an alien seeking acceptance but that of a female superhero trying to break out in a world where one already exists, where people are already comfortable with one with an ’S’ flying around.
It’s the hypocrisy of the genre that DC is not allowed to take a property seriously because for some reason, superheroes are supposed to be ‘fun’ and just ‘people in spandex punching each other for justice’ but whenever a new superhero Netflix series from their competitor premiers, you’ll hear talk from the same people about how it’s better than anything DCTV is currently doing. So they’re not allowed to be serious and if they’re not, they’re always guaranteed to lose to those who are? How does that work? And if being serious about superhero concepts means the Netflix series will always be considered superior to the DCTV, then why are people standing in the way of DC taking superheroes seriously? I personally have no qualms with any of the series but it bears thinking where they would all be right now, if people weren’t spending their time propping them up by bashing the DCEU.
It would seem that only certain heroes are allowed to be taken seriously. You’re absolutely allowed to do a realistic take on Batman/Daredevil/Wolverine, etc but Superman? We need to be reminded every five seconds that he exists in a wacky universe of evil robots and rich bald sociopaths. Despite the fact that there are plenty of stories that treat Superman in the same way that the DCEU Has, including his very first stories where he was a left-wing social justice activist who took on anti-union bosses and corrupt politicians.
Saying that Superman can’t be treated seriously is just another way of keeping the character stuck in the silver age where everyone wants him and then They can complain within the same breadth that he’s not ‘’relatable’’.
I just really want to put a fucking end to this mentality that you can’t make stories like this without treating it as a novelty.
