Mavrinian maidan - Pavlograd
This is one of the most mysterious places in Ukraine - “an ancient observatory”, as ufologists like to call it. On the ground level the area is unremarkable, but it worth you to get to the sky and you’ll see that the contours of the hills got form of a crab. In fact - this is a cut cone with a foundation pit, from which extend in different directions curly earthworks.
No one knows how this fairly high hill formed, but archaeologists and historians gave us few viable hypotheses. In the first, the most common version, these hills are the result of man-made excavation marauding mounds in the past. In another version the mounds appeared as a result of their use by the Cossacks as a defense fortifications and a watchtower. There is also a hypothesis that in the distant past there was mined saltpeter.
But most of all people like the hypotheses that it is difficult to prove today. It was spotted the bond between “pattern” of Mavrinian maidan and the position of the sun depending on the time of year, where was born the theory that this place served as an observatory, a temple or a place of sacrifice. It is possible that this place was a calendar kind of like the famous British Stonehenge. And, of course, UFO-theory! Some people believe that the Mavrinian maidan is the place of their landing.
