Since everyone is rightfully praising Power Rangers for having a character on the autism spectrum, it seems like a good time to remind everyone to check out The Accountant.
Honestly I haven’t seen the movie myself, but I’ve heard from a lot of autistic people that’s it honestly kind of a really bad depiction of autistic people? And very much playing into the gross ‘autistic people are unfeeling and evil’ tropes?
I can only attest, as someone who has never been diagnosed with any kind of autism or anything similar, from my own interpretation that his character isn’t presented as evil. He’s definitely an anti-hero, someone along the lines of Jason Bourne or maybe even John Wick. He isn’t unfeeling or evil so much as he just has a very hard time expressing his feelings and he has issues from growing up with an abusive father. He shows kindness, affection and has a fairly clear ethical code. The closest comparison I’d think of is Wilson Fisk in Daredevil (A bit funny, I know, especially as Jon Bernthal is also in it in a major role).
I won’t pretend it’s perfect or anything but it’s clear that a lot of work went into portraying autism with a degree of accuracy and, like Power Rangers, They obviously had good intentions which I know doesn’t give anyone a pass for fucking up nor should it.
Of course that’s just my opinion. I could be wrong.
