Detentionaire is about a boy named Lee Ping framed for the biggest prank in all high school history. Because all proof points to Lee, he’s put into detention for a full year of school (as well as grounded for a year). But who would want to ruin his life?

When you first watch the show, there are probably two things that may turn you off. The art style and the stereotypes. The art however, no longer bothers me. In fact, it’s charming and at this point I can’t really see it in any other way. The animation is flash animated (which definitely gets better now that I’m looking at the first episode again), but there are also flashbacks, photos, and background characters in such a lovely pencil style that I would buy an art book for this show in an instant. Here’s some examples:

At first, this show is heavily focused on cliques and stereotypes which could be portrayed as offensive or eye-roll worthy. Wannabe gangster, unnaturally foreign kid, “Glamazons,” big bad bully, cybernetic war hungry general principal etc.

But the magic is that this is to throw the viewer off. The longer you watch the show, the more you realize that all these stereotypes aren’t really there. Almost every character has interesting character development with a secret or important background information. The Glamazon you may have despised in season 1 becomes an enjoyable character you cheer on in season 3. The characters you wanted to shut up and disappear become endearing characters that you can’t imagine the show without.

And don’t get me started on the mysteries. What really makes this show a wonder to watch is its series continuity. You physically cannot watch it out of order or you’ll miss something. Once you solve a mystery, go back and watch the process again. I can tell you that once you know who the perp is, you can see all their suspicious activity in prior episodes. Questions you put off as the show just being a quirky cartoon in season 1 are brought up seriously in season 4. That’s how far the continuity can go. Everything is important. Everything.

The other great thing about it is that the longer you watch, the more intense it gets. You may be trying to figure out who radcircles is now but later you’ll be trying to understand the conspiracies under the school. I’d tell you more but I’d have to send you to Room 113b.

Basically, I’ve marathoned this show in the span of two days. Twice.
