Please, if you read one text post today, let it be this one- the Ukraine situation continues to get worse. Riot police using live ammunition on protestors, government-funded thugs burning down their sole hospital installation, killing several and wounding many more. Talk of civil war follows closely on the heels of a claim of independence. Currently, the city of Kiev is under complete lock, with millions inside. It all boils down to the people of a nation being told they are not allowed to choose the direction the country takes, with the wants of those in power enforced by in direct contrast to the wishes of the people.
This all started with the discussion of Ukraine’s involvement in the EU- with the people of the nation by large supporting the motion, with the government in support of an enlarged allegiance to Russia. The historically poorly managed government of the nation has had its turbulence, but nothing that couldn’t be solved by pen and will, but for them to bolster their aims by bullet and boot upon the people of the very nation they claim to uphold, is sickening. Very recently, the western region of Ukraine has actually declared independence from their oppressive government, placing the entire nation on the brink of civil war.
It’s too early for accurate statistics to be drawn- prior to the burning of the hospital, the death toll for both sides was slated to about a roughly evenly split 25-30 depending on the source, but nearly all statements are coming from the side that claims there is a truce. The same side with a history of sending plainclothes combat units to turn tides and wreak havoc among the lines of the protesters.
To put it all in a shortened form:
- The people of Ukraine are being denied the freedom to determine their nation’s actions
- Kiev is under lockdown with roughly 4 million inside
- Riot police are using lethal force on protestors
- Government funded thugs set flame to an occupied hospital
- Death toll estimates range from at least 25 to over 100
- Roughly one thousand protestors have been wounded
- The official statement from the government is that a truce is in place
This needs to stop but is not getting the coverage it deserves.
