Pixar gave the news about a future film inspired on the Día de los muertos like in… 2012 (without a title, which was released until 2015), some years after The Book of Life was even announced.
Also, Gutierrez never asked Pixar for an opportunity, it was a Del Toro production since the beginning (and totally encouraged from the start).
