Honestly? This movie is worth watching at least once just for the animation. I mean. Holy fuck. How often nowadays do you see 2D animation this smooth and detailed and characters given so much personality and charm through that attention to detail?

I saw this movie with a friend, and we were both blown away by the animation and music in this scene. I downloaded the soundtrack the next evening after I kept replaying snippets of it in my head, and I found myself listening to this song all through the next week on my drives home from work.

It would be fascinating for someone who knows about the relation of eye movements and memory to dig into 0:23-ish. Tempest is clearly processing a lot in that moment. Twilight’s pupil contraction as sunlight breaks through is amazingly done as well.

Notice that Tempest’s eyes are much duller than Twilight’s. I read a fan-theory that Tempest is so tall because she lost her horn at a young age, and the raw stores of energy that unicorns generate for magic was instead “bottled up” and went into growth instead. The restrained energy might also rebound inside her as a damaging “free radical” effect that is progressively damaging her eyesight.

I love Emily Blunt’s intensity in her previous movies; I had no idea she had a singing range too. (Fun observation: I rewatched “Edge of Tomorrow” over the weekend, and Tempest’s armor is nearly identical to Rita Vrataski’s training vest.)

Fun fact: Daniel Ingram (the composer for the show and movie) was super excited to have Emily Blunt on as Tempest because he felt her singing skills were underutilized in films, and “Open Up Your Eyes” was written specifically with her voice and range in mind.
