Ok I just can’t get over how perfect the symbolism for Bruce Wayne’s “still waters run deep” thing is on BVS, especially when it comes to his house. Now the character has always been this way. He seems like a shallow rich playboy on top but he’s a bat vigilante at night. Yeah, we all know that.

But the symbolism in BVS is outstanding. His burned out and abandoned family home isn’t his actual home. It is a nice symbolism for his mental and emotional state at this point in his life though. But his real home is the cool part. His true home is the lake house, which has glass walls all around it and actually appears pretty small. It’s a nice home. It reflects the image Bruce gives to the world. Classy, elegant, straight lines. Open and accessible. No secrets. Completely exposed.

Except that it’s like a glacier. You only see the top 10% and the rest is under the water. No one knows that under that seemingly transparent and small home is built a secret Bat Cave that includes several levels, a Batmobile, an arsenal, a huge room of computer technology, and a memorial to his fallen sidekick. The ramp to drive down into it is under the water and on the surface that water appears to be a fairly smooth current—right until it parts and a ramp rises up.

Bruce wakes from a nightmare of a monster breaking out of his mother’s crypt and attacking him, then stands in the window of his house looking at the lake. All is calm and still. A stark contrast to the turmoil going on under the surface.

All that Lex party talk, the ten percent showing, when minutes before in the film he was down in his lair, staring at a bat suit and seething with repressed emotion. And then compare that to the complete savagery in his fighting.

Since I have far less experience with comics than most of you, I’ve never seen Bruce Wayne depicted this way before. It’s so inclusive of all facets of Bruce Wayne, and it’s incredible to see all this anger and rage just simmering under the surface even when he’s just Bruce Wayne and trying to hide it. Then you layer on his care for the little girl, he understands how he needs to interact with her and he’s so gentle.  Wow.

So when comic fans say this is the best canon Batman they’ve seen on the screen, I believe them. I also understand why I wanted to stand up in the theater my first viewing and shout “YES!”, because at the time I didn’t realize the reason. Got some funny looks for that one… ;)

Ben’s Bruce Wayne is my top Batman now. He’s so very real to me. That’s the second superhero Zack has helped me connect with on such a deep and real level. Thank you Zack Snyder. :)
