The DCEU has been organically and beautifully set up

dceu-positivity

The following rant/analysis has been submitted by V. As a way to avoid their email address from being shown, I copied the content of the submission in a new post. Have a good read ! :D

I’ve seen on numerous sites WB accused of botching the set up of the DCEU in their rush to catch up with Marvel.

While it’s probably true that WB wants to get the DCEU up and running ASAP, that doesn’t automatically mean that the execution of it was bad. The majority of the criticism surrounds having a joint Batman and Superman movie so soon in the extended universe. A lot of the comments essentially want DCEU to follow the blueprint of Marvel – have a series of stands alone movies with events that runs concurrently to each others before the first big team up.

I don’t have a problem with Marvel’s method. They have good reasons for doing what they did and it was very successful. However, there is more than one way to skin a cat and I disagree that the DCEU was poorly set up. In fact I think Snyder, Goyer, Terrio and the rest of the creative team have done a great job of organically setting up a truly interconnected universe.

Superman and the events of MOS is the foundation for the DCEU. Learning about the existence of Superman, alien life form and getting invaded by said aliens was a paradigm shift for the in-movie universe and set up the events leading up to the first Justice League movie. First, people now realized that there are beings with incredible powers amongst them – opening the door for all the meta- humans to come out of hiding. Second, there is intelligent life out in space and they are not necessary friendly – a set up for the Green Lantern Corps and the eventual invasion by Darkseid.

In BvS the audience get dropped into the middle of this extended universe as we witnessed the respond to this paradigm shift at a micro (Bruce Wayne, Lex Luthor) and macro (the public, the government etc.) levels. I think it was very realistic – we have people who responded to Superman and his power by worshipping him as a God, we have another group who responded with fear manifested as hatred (earth belongs to human, God hates aliens etc.) and we have people like Senator Finch who are ambivalent; they want to believe that he’s just a good guy who is trying to do the right thing, but they need to know that he can co-exist with the existing laws and systems of the world.

Thanks to Lex Luthor’s machinations, mid-way through BvS it seems like fear and hatred have won and people turned against Superman, but by the end of the movie his sacrifice demonstrated – more than any speech ever could – who he really is; just a man (not a god) trying to do the right thing even if it means giving up his life. It is a powerful message that changed not only Batman and Wonder Woman, but the public.

Jor El’s words have essentially come true, Superman has given the people of Earth an ideal to strive towards and the Justice League will come to symbolize that. Another outcome of Superman’s sacrifice is that once other meta-humans make themselves known, the public – learning from their mistakes with Superman – will be kinder and more accepting of their “heroes”. I’m looking forward to the public reaction to their “original” hero’s resurrection and return when he joins the other Justice League members to protect mankind against Darkseid.

To conclude, I think the DCEU has been set up wonderfully. I particularly loved the inter-connectedness of the movies’ universe so far and with news that Suicide Squad is a direct follow up to BvS as well as suggestions of Cyborg being in the Flash movie, I hope this inter-connectedness will continue. I also love that the DCEU doesn’t just focus on the heroes, but also show how these heroes impact their wider world. By including the public reactions to these superheroes beyond the brief “oh hey it’s Superman, awesome!” it really feel like an actual universe populated with these living, breathing, larger than life figures. It has been a while since I’ve been invested in a fictional universe, but thanks to Snyder and co. I’m very excited about all the possibilities of the DCEU.

Ruby Bridges was the first black child to desegregate the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in Louisiana during the New Orleans school desegregation crisis in 1960.

This movie made me cry, I was so heart broken by how Ruby Bridges was treated! She was only 6, but was so strong. She is a very brave girl and she did not care what the white folks called her.

People are simply disgusting to minimize people by skin color!

Ruby you might not think you’re a hero… But to other people you are! You are A HERO and you are A PERSON WHO MADE AMERICA CHANGE!

this is white culture, this is their history, this is their legacy…being enraged at a damn baby just because she’s black.

Ruby Bridges in 2010

“As Bridges describes it, “Driving up I could see the crowd, but living in New Orleans, I actually thought it was Mardi Gras. There was a large crowd of people outside of the school. They were throwing things and shouting, and that sort of goes on in New Orleans at Mardi Gras.“ Former United States Deputy Marshal Charles Burks later recalled, “She showed a lot of courage. She never cried. She didn’t whimper. She just marched along like a little soldier, and we’re all very very proud of her.“

U.S. Marshals escorted Bridges to and from school

As soon as Bridges entered the school, white parents pulled their own children out; all the teachers refused to teach while a black child was enrolled. Only one person agreed to teach Ruby and that was Barbara Henry, from Boston, Massachusetts, and for over a year Henry taught her alone, “as if she were teaching a whole class.”

Every morning, as Bridges walked to school, one woman would threaten to poison her; because of this, the U.S. Marshals dispatched by President Eisenhower, who were overseeing her safety, allowed Ruby to eat only the food that she brought from home.

Another woman at the school put a black baby doll in a wooden coffin and protested with it outside the school, a sight that Bridges Hall has said “scared me more than the nasty things people screamed at us.” At her mother’s suggestion, Bridges began to pray on the way to school, which she found provided protection from the comments yelled at her on the daily walks.”

THIS SHIT WAS ONLY 58 YEARS AGO. PEOPLE WHO PARTICIPATED IN THIS RACIST TERRORISM AND ACTS LIKE IT ARE STILL ALIVE, AND THEIR KIDS ARE IN THEIR 40′S AND 50′S.

DON’T LET RACISM APOLOGISTS GET AWAY WITH “WHY ARE YOU LIVING IN THE PAST,” BULLSHIT ARGUMENTS. WE ARE LITERALLY STILL DEALING WITH THE FAMILIES THAT FORMED HATE MOBS OVER BLACK CHILDREN ATTENDING SCHOOL WITH WHITE KIDS.
