the amount of people who believe that “negan” ruined twd and not the shit writing, lazy characterization of all the characters, the shit cgi, shit cinematography, and all around, just, shit, is the reason I can’t take half of ya’ll seriously anymore
I just wanted to add onto this from a comic standpoint.
Truth be told, I can, to some degree, see where those people may be coming from.
I love Jeffrey. He’s an amazing talent to have on the show, he does his best with what he’s given and does it damn well, however, Negan’s character over the past couple of seasons has been written awfully.
The reality of the matter is that you are supposed to feel for Negan and understand that he’s just another leader, not much different from Rick, who is trying to keep people safe. The writers did nothing to make Negan a character with depth and did not successfully make the audience feel like he’s a human too. This is something that Robert Kirkman did very well in the comic, and it’s unfortunate that it couldn’t be carried on into the show. It makes me specially sad because I love the shit out of Negan and honestly, AMC did him dirty.
On the topic of Glenn’s death, this was written into the comics years before season seven was even confirmed and Steven, being a comic reader, was well aware of it. His death in the show was a little different, in terms of circumstance, from the comic, but those who see his death as anything but necessary for the progression in characters like Rick or Maggies’s story, are just having issues with letting go of a beloved character.
Not being able to recognize bad from good writing, especially with character deaths, is really easy to do when you don’t let yourself understand why it needed to happen.
For example:
Glenn and Abraham’s deaths needed to happen for Sasha and Maggie’s motivations/actions to make sense later in the series. This, for me, is what I consider very decent writing because it all added up once it had finished playing out.
Carl’s death, on the other hand, is ultimately one of the most unnecessary deaths in the series overall and has yet to display any real benefits to Rick, Michonne, or even Negan’s character development. Personally, this is not a decision that I would put under ‘good writing’.
Regardless of it all, Angela is our gal now and she’s done some wonderful things for the show in the past. Scott may seem to be in a position that gives him more power, but he knows that he’s on extra thin ice now. The last thing AMC wants is to lose money and if it does because of more decisions that Gimple is approving/disapproving, they’ll have no choice but to take their audience and their opinions more seriously.
I got onto a bit of a rant there but I just wanted it out in the open. The writing makes or breaks a show, and season nine will determine whether or not The Walking Dead stands a chance for any further seasons. Let’s all just hold hands and hope that Angela shows Gimple how it’s done.
